Rakuten Eyes Domestic Bonds to Boost Investor Confidence

Billionaire Hiroshi Mikitani, the founder of Rakuten Group Inc., has expressed the company's intention to sell more bonds in Japan as part of its strategy to diversify its financing sources. Citing Bloomberg, Rapporteur Mikitani highlighted that investors are growing more confident in Rakuten's financial standing, evidenced by declining yield demands on the company's debt.

Market pricing is reflecting a gradual shift in sentiment toward Rakuten, following a challenging period marked by losses and a strained balance sheet. The potential move to issue yen-denominated bonds would further signify this positive trend, though hurdles remain. Notably, Rakuten's current credit rating is below the "A" threshold favored by numerous Japanese investors, complicating its domestic borrowing efforts.

In the face of nearly $2.6 billion in bonds maturing within the first half of the year, Rakuten is racing against time to solidify its financing strategies. Despite improvements, significant losses in its mobile segment persist, posing an ongoing challenge. Mikitani noted that the specific details regarding the amount and timing of potential Japanese bond issuances remain undecided.
