Rakuten Scraps IPO Plans to Focus on Mizuho Partnership

Rakuten Group Inc. has decided not to proceed with the initial public offering of its securities division on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Instead, the company will focus on enhancing its collaboration with Mizuho Securities Co. This strategic pivot was reported by Bloomberg with additional details suggesting that the move comes after Rakuten's securities arm temporarily withdrew its IPO application in late 2023.

The decision follows a significant financial improvement for Rakuten, as the company announced its first quarterly operating profit since 2020. This was achieved after successfully reducing losses in its mobile segment, which has now become profitable when excluding marketing costs aimed at acquiring new customers. Rakuten's strategic shift is also in alignment with its long-term goals to stabilize its business finances, which have been impacted by its venture into Japan's highly competitive mobile market.
