RBA Expected to Initiate Rate Cuts in February

According to a recent Bloomberg survey, a majority of economists anticipate Australia's central bank will commence interest-rate cuts next month, marking its first monetary easing in over four years. The poll indicates that 20 out of 23 respondents foresee the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) lowering its cash rate to 4.10% on February 18, reflecting a growing consensus in financial markets, which imply about a 90% chance of a rate reduction.

This sentiment follows the latest data showing core inflation moderated more than anticipated in the fourth quarter, edging closer to the RBA's target of 2-3%. Economists from Westpac Banking Corp., Royal Bank of Canada, TD Securities, and AMP Ltd. have subsequently advanced their predictions for the RBA's first rate cut to February. This decision will coincide with the central bank's release of its quarterly economic forecast update.

The prospective easing would be the first since November 2020, when rates were slashed to a historic low of 0.1% to mitigate the economic impact of stringent COVID-19 restrictions. However, the subsequent post-pandemic inflation prompted a tightening cycle beginning in 2022, with rates held at 4.35% since November 2023, pending a 'sustainable' dip in core CPI.

Australia's economy is grappling with significant challenges under high interest rates, including tepid private sector demand and a marked downturn in household consumption. Despite this, unemployment remains relatively stable at around 4%. According to Andrew Ticehurst, a senior rates strategist at Nomura Holdings Inc., rate cuts are anticipated to be more closely tied to quarterly CPI trends and updated forecasts, rather than any severe labour market deterioration.
