Record High for Global Seaborne Iron Ore Imports Driven by China in 2024

In 2024, the world's imports of seaborne iron ore reached an unprecedented high, largely driven by China's robust purchasing activities. According to data, global seaborne imports of iron ore increased by 3.6% to 1.707 billion metric tons, a rise primarily attributed to China's 4.9% surge in imports, which amounted to 1.274 billion tons.

China's iron ore purchases show a significant increase despite a projected decline in domestic steel production. Official figures indicate a 2.7% drop in crude steel output to 929.19 million tons in the first 11 months of 2024, with full-year production expected to be around 1 billion tons, consistent with the past six years.

From an economic standpoint, China's iron ore import value soared to USD 133.4 billion in 2024 from USD 127.1 billion in 2023, according to IndexBox data. This growth can be partly credited to strategic inventory rebuilding, with port stockpiles rising from 114.5 million tons at the end of 2023 to 146.85 million tons at the close of 2024.

Additionally, China's export value of iron ore increased to USD 3 billion in 2024 from USD 2.6 billion in 2023, with the top export destinations being Japan (USD 1.7 billion) and Taiwan (Chinese) (USD 648.6 million). On the import front, Australia remained China's largest supplier, with imports valued at USD 80.4 billion in 2024, followed by Brazil at USD 28 billion.

Despite these growth metrics, uncertainties loom over the sector due to potential shifts in international trade policies under the new U.S. administration, possibly impacting the iron ore demand landscape globally. As a result, stakeholders in the iron ore market remain in a cautious 'wait-and-see' mode entering 2025.
