Record Levels of Negative Equity Hit Car Owners, Reveals New Study

A troubling trend is emerging in the automotive finance market as a growing number of consumers find themselves 'upside down' on their car loans, meaning they owe more on the loan than the car is worth. According to recent research, nearly one in four trade-ins associated with new vehicle purchases was 'underwater' in terms of equity during the fourth quarter of the past year.

Data from Edmunds shows that 24.9% of trade-ins toward new cars carried negative equity, a notable increase from 20.4% just the year before, and substantially higher than the 32.7% observed in the fourth quarter of 2019. IndexBox platform insights underline that electric vehicle (EV) owners are particularly vulnerable, with the average amount owed on underwater EV loans jumping to $10,186 in late 2024, up from $7,116 in 2022.

The average age of cars being traded in with negative equity is only 3.3 years, which suggests many consumers may not fully understand how interest on car loans is typically front-loaded. A significant shift in market dynamics further complicates the situation. After the pandemic, supply chain disruptions and production delays led to a spike in car prices, even causing many consumers to pay above sticker price during 2021 and 2022. Now, with used car prices declining, many drivers face difficult financial decisions.

Another contributing factor is that many incurred additional debt by opting for lengthy car loan terms, leading to high levels of outstanding principal balances. This precarious situation is reflected in a 3.3% drop in used car and truck prices over the past year, according to IndexBox.

Experts advise consumers to weigh their options carefully, suggesting that leasing could be a more viable alternative for those who prefer changing vehicles frequently, to avoid accumulating negative equity. Alternatively, holding onto the existing vehicle while maintaining payment diligence might prevent further financial strain.
