Record Profits Propel Santander and Crédit Agricole to New Heights

Spanish bank Banco Santander has shattered previous profit records, announcing a staggering EUR12.57 billion in profit for the full year of 2024. The announcement, which can be found on Euronews, outlines Santander's strategic plan to further boost shareholder value through a EUR10 billion share buyback scheme over the upcoming years. The bank's impressive fourth-quarter earnings of EUR3.27 billion mark an 11% increase from the previous year.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, Santander's success is driven by a robust net interest income surge of 8%, supported by a substantial customer base expansion. By the end of 2024, the bank had amassed 173 million clients, an 8 million increase year-on-year. The bank aims to maintain its strong momentum by focusing on mid-high single-digit growth in net fee income and enhancing its return on tangible equity (RoTE) beyond the 17% mark by 2025.

Meanwhile, Crédit Agricole SA (CA) joins Santander in reporting remarkable profits. The French bank recorded a net income of EUR1.69 billion for Q4 2024, elevating its yearly financial achievements. The bank attributes this success to significant growth in its asset management, insurance, corporate, and investment banking sectors. Crédit Agricole is taking strategic steps to bolster its market presence, particularly with its growing stake in Italian lender Banco BPM.

As these leading European banks continue to expand their influence and strengthen financial standings, they provide a telling indication of the potential recovery and growth trajectory in the sector, promising a new era of profitability and shareholder value.
