As the holiday season enters its final stretch, optimism is building among retailers who believe that the already-brisk shopping momentum will accelerate further before Christmas. Early indicators suggest that American consumers are spending significantly online this year, bolstering retailers' hopes for a robust season finale. Data from Adobe reveals that digital spending reached a record $10.8 billion this Black Friday, contributing to a 1.4% year-over-year increase in retail spending this November, as reported by the National Retail Federation (NRF). This trend is likely to persist, with only 10% of shoppers indicating they had completed their holiday shopping earlier this month. The NRF anticipates that over 157 million people might shop on the last Saturday before Christmas, the second-highest turnout in recent years. Moreover, around 70% of consumers plan to shop after Christmas to take advantage of deals, use gift cards, and return unwanted items, potentially pushing holiday spending to $989 billion by January, a 3.5% increase from the previous year.
Despite the general uptick in spending, a notable divergence is occurring between online and in-store shopping. According to Goldman Sachs analysts, online spending has surged while physical store visits, which constitute 70% of retail sales, have seen a decline. RetailNext, a traffic analytics firm, reported a 3% decrease in visitors to stores this Black Friday compared to last year, with sales dropping 2.3%.
Interestingly, consumers have demonstrated a more deliberate approach to in-store shopping. "They're being more intentional with their purchases, often opting for higher-ticket items over filling their baskets with smaller goods," noted Joe Shasteen, global head of advanced analytics at RetailNext. "It's clear that intentional spending remains the theme."
With a shortened shopping window between Thanksgiving and Christmas, many consumers are expected to eagerly hit both physical and online stores, motivated by last-minute gifts and special promotions, as noted by Katherine Cullen, NRF's vice president of industry and consumer insights.
