World Consumption of Roasted Malt

Over the period under review, global consumption reached the peak volume in 2024 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Consumption By Country
The country with the largest volume of roasted malt consumption was China (723K tons), comprising approx. 17% of total volume. Moreover, roasted malt consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, India (291K tons), twofold. The United States (223K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 5.1% share.
In China, roasted malt consumption expanded at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the period from 2013-2024. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+8.5% per year) and the United States (+9.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($477M), India ($293M) and the United States ($249M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2024, with a combined 29% share of the global market. Turkey, South Africa, Indonesia, Brazil, Russia, Japan and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
In terms of the main consuming countries, South Africa, with a CAGR of +19.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to market size over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The countries with the highest levels of roasted malt per capita consumption in 2024 were South Africa (2,454 kg per 1000 persons), Turkey (2,210 kg per 1000 persons) and Japan (980 kg per 1000 persons).

In 2024, global roasted malt production expanded to 4.1M tons, growing by 3.5% on 2023. Overall, production enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 31%. Global production peaked in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, roasted malt production amounted to $3.3B in 2024 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak level at $3.3B in 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to 2024.
Production By Country
The country with the largest volume of roasted malt production was China (729K tons), accounting for 18% of total volume. Moreover, roasted malt production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (290K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United States (214K tons), with a 5.2% share.
In China, roasted malt production increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the period from 2013-2024. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: India (+8.6% per year) and the United States (+8.6% per year).
Imports
World Imports of Roasted Malt
In 2024, purchases abroad of roasted malt decreased by -18.9% to 420K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2023 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 517K tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
In value terms, roasted malt imports shrank markedly to $339M in 2024. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2013 to 2024; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $407M, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
Imports By Country
In 2024, Turkey (109K tons), distantly followed by Panama (47K tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (40K tons) and South Africa (23K tons) represented the main importers of roasted malt, together generating 52% of total imports. Burundi (13K tons), Ethiopia (12K tons), the United States (12K tons), Brazil (10K tons), Mozambique (10K tons) and Japan (8.5K tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2024, average annual rates of growth with regard to roasted malt imports into Turkey stood at +24.0%. At the same time, Brazil (+38.1%), Burundi (+37.9%), Mozambique (+8.9%) and Panama (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +38.1% from 2013-2024. Ethiopia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-2.4%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.5%), the United States (-3.3%) and Japan (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+24 p.p.), Panama (+4.4 p.p.), Burundi (+3.1 p.p.) and Brazil (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Taiwan (Chinese) saw its share reduced by -2.8% from 2013 to 2024, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Turkey ($67M), Panama ($36M) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($27M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2024, with a combined 39% share of global imports. South Africa, Ethiopia, the United States, Brazil, Mozambique, Japan and Burundi lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
Among the main importing countries, Brazil, with a CAGR of +36.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
The average roasted malt import price stood at $808 per ton in 2024, rising by 2.5% against the previous year. Over the last eleven years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 13%. Global import price peaked in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($1,305 per ton), while Burundi ($490 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+5.7%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports
World Exports of Roasted Malt
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of roasted malt decreased by -20% to 175K tons in 2024. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 273K tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2024, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, roasted malt exports dropped notably to $165M in 2024. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2023 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $197M, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Exports By Country
In 2024, South Africa (31K tons), distantly followed by Germany (18K tons), the UK (18K tons), Russia (14K tons), Poland (14K tons), Belgium (13K tons), China (11K tons) and Colombia (9K tons) were the major exporters of roasted malt, together generating 73% of total exports. The following exporters - the Czech Republic (6.4K tons) and the Netherlands (6.2K tons) - each amounted to a 7.2% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +31.5%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($25M), South Africa ($23M) and the UK ($20M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2024, together comprising 41% of global exports.
