Salt Price in America Jumps 23% to $43.5 per Ton

U.S. Salt Import Price per Ton August 2022

In August 2022, the salt price per ton stood at $43.5, jumping by 23% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated prominent growth from January 2022 to August 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.1% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, salt import price decreased by -6.1% against June 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 an increase of 59% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $46 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to August 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($106.0 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($18.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+34.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Salt Imports

Salt imports into the United States shrank to 1.3M tons in August 2022, which is down by -9.3% compared with the previous month. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 81% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 2.9M tons. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, salt imports stood at $57M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. Imports peaked at $76M in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

U.S. Salt Imports by Country

Canada (475K tons), Chile (409K tons) and Mexico (225K tons) were the main suppliers of salt imports to the United States, together comprising 85% of total imports. Pakistan, Bahamas, Egypt and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +281.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Canada ($19M), Chile ($11M) and Mexico ($4.3M) were the largest salt suppliers to the United States, together comprising 61% of total imports. the Netherlands, Pakistan, Bahamas and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
