SARB Prepares for Rate Cut to Ease Economic Pressure

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is poised to reduce its repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.50% next week, according to a Reuters poll. This anticipated move marks the beginning of a series of rate cuts aimed at easing economic pressures in the country. source.

All 19 economists in the Reuters survey agreed on this initial reduction, forecasting another 25 basis point cut in March that would bring the rate to 7.25%. However, the final 25 basis point cut in this cycle is not expected until the third quarter, diverging from earlier predictions of a cut in May.

IndexBox data indicates that South Africa's economic growth is projected at 1.7% for 2025, despite the challenges that have impacted the GDP in the past quarters, such as load-shedding and logistics issues. The agricultural sector, which significantly influenced the GDP contraction in Q3 2024, is expected to recover.

Amidst these domestic economic adjustments, the SARB's decisions are also being closely observed in light of emerging global economic dynamics, particularly those arising from policy changes by the new U.S. administration under President Donald Trump. The inflation rate in South Africa, despite having risen for two consecutive months, remains below the Reserve Bank's mid-point target. It averaged 3.0% in December and is projected to rise slightly to 4.1% this year.

Experts, including Johannes Khosa from the Nedbank Group Economic Unit, stress the potential inflationary impact of President Trump's proposed tariffs and other policy measures, which could influence the SARB's future interest rate strategies.

Economists such as David Omojomolo of Capital Economics remain optimistic about South Africa's economic prospects, projecting a growth rate of 2.3% for the year, anticipating that improvements in macroeconomic conditions will persist, aided by policy adjustments and a likely recovery in key economic sectors.
