Savannah Resources Seeks Approval for Compulsory Land Acquisition in Portugal

Savannah Resources is making significant strides towards securing government approval for compulsory land acquisitions surrounding its Barroso lithium project in Portugal, according to a recent report by Mining.com. The London-listed company's move is set to test Europe's commitment to bolstering its minerals industry amid local opposition.

The Barroso lithium deposit is the largest in Europe, with estimated reserves reaching 28 million metric tons of high-grade lithium. Savannah plans to construct four open-pit mines in the northern Barroso region, aiming for an annual lithium output sufficient for approximately half a million electric vehicle batteries. The project's accelerated timeline anticipates commencing commercial output by 2027.

Despite acquiring more than 100 plots through a voluntary program, Savannah found that Portuguese laws also support compulsory purchases for infrastructure projects in certain circumstances. The company has been buying land voluntarily at approximately twice the rate of the compulsory purchase value of 1 euro per square meter.

The developments at the Barroso site are pivotal for the European Union's strategic objective to minimize its reliance on international partners for critical raw materials by boosting regional production capabilities.
