View PricingScout Motors Hits 50,000 Reservations for Electric Vehicles
LAS VEGAS — Scout Motors has achieved a significant milestone, having received over 50,000 refundable reservation deposits for its inaugural electric pickups and SUVs, as revealed by Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume during a private media event at CES in Las Vegas. For further details, you can access the complete report on CNBC through this link.
Scout has garnered substantial interest ahead of the 2027 release of its Terra pickup truck and Traveler SUV, both of which will be available as all-electric or extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). Blume expressed enthusiasm about the market response, saying, "The market response has been very, very positive." Despite the strong numbers, Scout's reservations fall short of the figures other automakers attracted during the initial wave of all-electric vehicle launches in the early 2020s.
Volkswagen's Strategic Expansion Plans
Bringing back the Scout brand, originally active from 1961 to 1980, is a key part of Volkswagen's strategy to expand its U.S. market share. Currently, Volkswagen's market share in the United States stands at around 4%, but the company sees potential for growth with its new lineup. "Our ambition is much bigger to improve our market share," emphasized Blume.
In a separate discussion, Scout CEO Scott Keogh also revealed that approximately 70% of reservations are for the Traveler SUV, aligning with the company's expectations. The decision to include EREVs in the lineup is a strategic move aiming to stabilize the brand against potential fluctuations in consumer demand for EVs.
U.S. Automotive Market Dynamics
The American automotive market is buzzing with activity. In 2023 alone, the export value for passenger cars in the United States was valued at $63.6 billion, with Canada being the top export destination, amounting to $16.3 billion. On the import side, the United States imported passenger cars valued at $208 billion, primarily from Mexico, Japan, and Canada, with respective values of $44.8 billion, $40.1 billion, and $34.7 billion.
The upcoming Scout vehicles, priced under $60,000, are designed to offer more than just competitive pricing. They aim to deliver an enhanced in-vehicle user experience and connectivity features, tailored for outdoor enthusiasts. These models are expected to benefit from satellite connectivity, ensuring better accessibility even in remote locations.
Production and Supply Chain Assembly
Scout is currently in the process of erecting a $2 billion production facility in South Carolina, with an anticipated annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles. Collaborations are also in place with a Canadian VW joint venture to provide battery cells, as well as a $5.8 billion software and electrical architecture partnership with Rivian.
Through these developments, Volkswagen and Scout Motors aim to leave a distinct mark on the U.S. electric vehicle market, leveraging nostalgia and innovation to attract modern drivers.
