ServiceNow's Fiscal Outlook Disappoints, Focus Shifts to AI Adoption

ServiceNow Inc. has announced a fiscal-year sales outlook that did not meet Wall Street's expectations, prioritizing the adoption of its new generative artificial intelligence products over immediate revenue gains. Bloomberg reports that this strategic focus on AI caused the company's shares to fall in premarket trading.

For 2025, ServiceNow anticipates its subscription revenue will be approximately $12.7 billion, while Wall Street analysts had projected around $12.9 billion, according to Bloomberg's data. ServiceNow, headquartered in Santa Clara, California, specializes in automating personnel and IT operations, and has been integrating AI features into its offerings over the past two years.

New Pricing Strategy Causes Shake-Up

In an unexpected move, ServiceNow plans to introduce a pay-as-you-go pricing model for its generative AI tools in 2025. This could lead to a decrease in upfront subscriptions, aiming instead for accelerated adoption and long-term monetization based on usage. Industry analysts, like Adam Crisafulli from Vital Knowledge, have flagged this as a significant shift that may impact ServiceNow's financial results.

IndexBox indicates that the company is banking on the reduced costs of large language models to maintain its margins while boosting product adoption. CEO Bill McDermott emphasized that the commoditization of AI models is progressing faster than anticipated, providing a strategic benefit.

Federal Contracts and Share Buybacks

Beyond AI, the company is relying on federal contracts, including a substantial deal with the US Army. However, potential disruptions due to changes in the presidential administration loom. Despite these challenges, McDermott remains optimistic about their government business and the potential cost savings their products could deliver.

ServiceNow also revealed a $3 billion share buyback program, succeeding a $1.5 billion plan introduced in May 2023. This new financial maneuver reflects confidence in the company's long-term strategy despite the immediate stock market reaction.
