Shell Reports Decrease in Fourth-Quarter Profits Amid Stabilizing Energy Prices

Shell has announced a decline in its fourth-quarter profit, attributed to the impact of reduced refining margins and lower liquefied natural gas (LNG) trading revenues. [Reuters], the oil major revealed its adjusted earnings fell to $3.66 billion for the quarter ending December 31, 2024, significantly down from $7.31 billion in the same period the previous year.

This financial report reflects a broader trend among the world's leading oil and gas firms, who are experiencing weakened profits as global energy prices stabilize. According to the IndexBox platform, Australia's export of liquefied petroleum gases, including natural gas, was valued at $45.5 billion in 2024, making it the highest among the top exporting countries. The United States followed with $29 billion, while Russia recorded $25.3 billion.

On the import side, China led with imports valued at $43.9 billion in 2024, closely followed by Japan with $42.9 billion, indicating strong demand for natural gas in these regions. As part of its strategic shift, Shell, under CEO Wael Sawan's leadership, has been focusing on prioritizing its most profitable segments, including oil, gas, and biofuels, while gradually moving away from renewable power generation.
