Shell Warns of Lower Natural Gas Volumes and Earnings in Q4 2024

This announcement has sparked concerns about the broader performance of major energy companies as Shell's stock dipped by 1.2% to 2,587 pence in early London trading. Furthermore, Shell's fourth-quarter trading update revealed a slight increase in operating costs and diminished profits from its oil trading division.

The company's challenges come amidst a backdrop of similar reports from other industry giants. Notably, Exxon Mobil Corp., a principal rival, disclosed a significant $700 million impact on its own fourth-quarter earnings due to declining crude prices and shrinking refining margins.

Shell's statement highlighted that its trading and optimization results for this quarter would be notably weaker than the third quarter of 2024, predominantly due to the non-cash impacts from expiring hedging contracts in the natural gas sector. The company forecasts natural gas production to range between 880,000 to 920,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, a decrease from the 941,000 barrels reported in the previous quarter attributable to maintenance operations at its Pearl Gas-to-Liquids plant in Qatar.
