Siemens AG to Divest EUR2.5 Billion Stake in Siemens Energy

Siemens AG is gearing up to divest a EUR2.5 billion ($2.6 billion) stake in Siemens Energy AG, a strategic move that aims to finance its ambitious $10 billion acquisition of Altair Engineering Inc. According to Bloomberg, Siemens plans to sell approximately 6% of its 17% holding by the end of September, as stated by Chief Financial Officer Ralf Thomas in an interview.

The decision comes as Siemens Energy shares have surged more than fourfold this year, buoyed by investor optimism surrounding the company's efforts to resolve issues within its Gamesa wind-turbine unit. The company further strengthened its midterm targets last month in response to heightened demand for products serving power-intensive data centers.

The proceeds from selling its stake in Siemens Energy, along with recent divestments such as the EUR3.5 billion sale of its Innomotics heavy-duty motors operations, are expected to significantly contribute to funding the Altair takeover announced in October. While Siemens eventually intends to completely divest its holding in Siemens Energy, there is no immediate rush, as Thomas emphasized the company's cautious approach towards managing Siemens Energy's share price.

Additionally, Siemens has shown openness to selling 5% of its nearly 75% holding in Siemens Healthineers AG, a move projected to raise approximately EUR3 billion based on current market prices. By combining funds from stakes sales and divestments, Siemens anticipates requiring minimal debt financing, potentially through a modest bond issue, to cover any remaining financial needs.
