Signs of Economic Recovery in Turkey as Confidence Index Rises

Turkey's economic prospects are showing signs of improvement towards the end of 2024, as reflected in the latest economic confidence figures for December. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, the economic confidence index slightly increased to 98.8 in December, up from 97.1 in November. This upturn is primarily driven by heightened confidence among retailers and service providers.

Service providers' confidence significantly rose to 113.6 in December, compared to 111 in the previous month. Retailer confidence witnessed a similar upward trend, moving to 113 from 111.7 in November, while the construction sector saw its confidence climb to 89.4 from 87.8. Consumer sentiment also showed improvement, rising to 81.3 from 79.8 in November, indicating a cautiously optimistic outlook among the Turkish populace.

However, not all sectors painted a positive picture. Manufacturers experienced a dip in confidence, with the index declining to 102.7 from 103.4 in the prior month, suggesting ongoing challenges within the industrial sector. This comes as Turkey continues to grapple with the aftermath of severely high inflation rates, which hit a record 85.5% in October 2022 and remained elevated at 47.1% in November 2024.

The Turkish economy continues to recover from a series of economic challenges, including a severe cost of living crisis, high inflation, and the lingering effects of a protracted period of low interest rates under the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkiye's previous policy direction. Although corrective measures have been taken, the road to stabilizing the Turkish lira and curbing inflation remains fraught with difficulty.
