Smithfield Foods Prices IPO Below Forecast, Raising $521.7 Million

The IPO values Smithfield at $7.95 billion, marking its return to a U.S. exchange after more than ten years. Priced at $20 per share, this falls short of the $23-$27 per share range, which could have potentially raised up to $939.6 million. The offering generated $260.9 million for Smithfield, with the rest benefitting WH Group, Smithfield's parent company.

In 2024, the U.S. exported $6.4 billion worth of pork, up from $6.1 billion in 2023. Imports reached $1.5 billion in 2024, a slight increase from $1.4 billion in 2023.

Among its top export destinations in 2024, Mexico led the way with $2.2 billion worth of exports, followed by Japan at $1.2 billion, South Korea at $707.6 million, Canada at $427.6 million, and Colombia at $303.5 million. On the import side, Canada was the largest supplier, with exports to the U.S. valued at $918.4 million in 2024.

Founded in 1936 as The Smithfield Packing Company, Smithfield Foods has grown into a portfolio of key brands, including Eckrich and Nathan's Famous. After being listed on the New York Stock Exchange from 1999 to 2013, it was acquired by WH Group.

Morgan Stanley, BofA Securities, and Goldman Sachs are the lead underwriters for Smithfield's IPO.
