SoftBank's Major $25 Billion Investment in OpenAI: A Game-Changer in AI Valuations

Japanese investment giant SoftBank is preparing to spearhead a substantial investment into OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, at a staggering $300 billion valuation. Business Insider reports that such a move would equate OpenAI's worth to that of ByteDance, the owner of TikTok. Current ongoing discussions suggest that SoftBank could invest up to $25 billion in the AI company, initially reported by the Financial Times.

OpenAI presently holds the title of the third-most valuable private tech company, with a current valuation standing at $157 billion. This potential funding round might propel it to second place, alongside ByteDance and behind only SpaceX, which holds the top spot with a valuation of approximately $350 billion, based on recent stock transactions.

If the investment by SoftBank materializes, it would signify the most notable commitment to the generative AI sector, underscoring the ambitions of SoftBank's founder, Masayoshi Son, in advancing "artificial super intelligence." Before entering these latest discussions, OpenAI had already secured nearly $20 billion from major players like Thrive Capital, Khosla Ventures, and Nvidia.

Furthermore, this move would see SoftBank potentially overtaking Microsoft as the leading investor in OpenAI. Microsoft has, so far, invested around $13 billion into the company. According to IndexBox data, such strategic investments are pivotal as they potentially position OpenAI among the elite few globally valued in the centibillions, with competitors like Stripe and Shein significantly trailing.

This development follows closely after SoftBank and OpenAI announced a collaboration named Stargate, which plans to allocate up to $500 billion for AI infrastructure projects in the U.S. over the next four years. With SoftBank's Son as chairman, this project aims to deploy $100 billion imminently. The capital sourcing for this venture remains unclear as OpenAI is currently operating at a loss, and it's been suggested that SoftBank's potential investment could enable OpenAI to contribute approximately $15 billion to Stargate.
