South Africa Acyclic Hydrocarbons Exports
For the fourth consecutive year, South Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of acyclic hydrocarbons, which decreased by -3.7% to 263K tons in 2023. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 355K tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, acyclic hydrocarbons exports reduced to $418M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $489M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
the United States (84K tons), Singapore (67K tons) and Belgium (46K tons) were the main destinations of acyclic hydrocarbons exports from South Africa, together comprising 75% of total exports. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Germany and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for acyclic hydrocarbons exported from South Africa were the United States ($114M), Singapore ($108M) and Belgium ($79M), together comprising 72% of total exports. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Germany and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
Among the main countries of destination, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +34.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons (261K tons) was the largest type of acyclic hydrocarbons exported from South Africa, with a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by saturated acyclic hydrocarbons (1.9K tons), with a 0.7% share of total exports. The third position in this ranking was taken by propene (propylene) (6.4 tons), with less than 0.1% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: saturated acyclic hydrocarbons (-12.3% per year) and propene (propylene) (-5.1% per year).
In value terms, unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons ($415M) remains the largest type of acyclic hydrocarbons exported from South Africa, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by saturated acyclic hydrocarbons ($2.7M), with a 0.7% share of total exports. It was followed by propene (propylene), with less than 0.1% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of unsaturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: saturated acyclic hydrocarbons (-13.1% per year) and propene (propylene) (+0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the acyclic hydrocarbons price amounted to $1,590 per ton (FOB, South Africa), falling by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when the average export price increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,648 per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($2,766 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($1,358 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
