South Africa Bed Linen Exports
In 2024, the amount of bed linen exported from South Africa reduced to 969 tons, with a decrease of -6.5% against 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 2.6K tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bed linen exports dropped slightly to $10M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Overall, exports saw a deep slump. Exports by Country
Namibia (361 tons), Botswana (185 tons) and Lesotho (81 tons) were the main destinations of bed linen exports from South Africa, together comprising 65% of total exports. Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +20.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Namibia ($3.9M) remains the key foreign market for bed linen exports from South Africa, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($1.4M), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 7.3% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Namibia totaled -7.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-6.6% per year) and Zambia (-11.5% per year).
Exports by Type
Bed linen of other woven textiles and non-woven man-made fibres (654 tons) was the largest type of bed linen exported from South Africa, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, bed linen of other woven textiles and non-woven man-made fibres exceeded the volume of the second product type, bed linen of cotton (235 tons), threefold.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of bed linen of other woven textiles and non-woven man-made fibres exports totaled -9.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: bed linen of cotton (-11.1% per year) and bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles (-7.2% per year).
In value terms, bed linen with the largest exports in South Africa were bed linen of other woven textiles and non-woven man-made fibres ($6.1M), bed linen of cotton ($3.2M) and bed linen of knitted or crocheted textiles ($699K), together accounting for 99.9% of total exports.
Among the main product categories, bed linen of cotton, with a CAGR of -4.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
In 2024, the bed linen price stood at $10,292 per ton (FOB, South Africa), with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2014 to 2024, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2024 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($12,550 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malawi ($4,069 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia (+14.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
