South Africa Butanol Exports
In 2023, the amount of butanol exported from South Africa fell to 114K tons, reducing by -8.7% compared with 2022. Overall, exports showed a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 23%. The exports peaked at 173K tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, butanol exports dropped rapidly to $98M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 83% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $170M. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
Belgium (48K tons) was the main destination for butanol exports from South Africa, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, butanol exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (21K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by India (13K tons), with an 11% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belgium was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-2.9% per year) and India (+2.3% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($51M) remains the key foreign market for butanol exports from South Africa, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($14M), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 9.5% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Belgium was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-6.7% per year) and India (-1.5% per year).

Butan-1-ol (n-butyl alcohol) (111K tons) was the largest type of butanol exported from South Africa, with a 97% share of total exports. It was followed by butanols (excluding butan-1-ol (n-butyl alcohol)) (3.3K tons), with a 2.9% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of butan-1-ol (n-butyl alcohol) exports was relatively modest.
In value terms, butan-1-ol (n-butyl alcohol) ($95M) remains the largest type of butanol exported from South Africa, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by butanols (excluding butan-1-ol (n-butyl alcohol)) ($3.3M), with a 3.4% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of butan-1-ol (n-butyl alcohol) exports totaled -3.3%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the butanol price amounted to $862 per ton (FOB, South Africa), reducing by -25.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 174% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,505 per ton. From 2022 to 2023, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($1,050 per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($657 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (-0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
