South Africa Carbon Electrode Imports
After two months of growth, purchases abroad of carbon electrodes decreased by -14.8% to 1.3K tons in July 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2023 with an increase of 76% m-o-m.
In value terms, carbon electrode imports fell rapidly to $5.5M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when imports increased by 106% m-o-m.

Imports by Country
China (442 tons), Spain (437 tons) and India (326 tons) were the main suppliers of carbon electrode imports to South Africa, with a combined 94% share of total imports.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +14.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest carbon electrode suppliers to South Africa were Spain ($2M), China ($1.8M) and India ($1.3M), with a combined 93% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country
In July 2023, the carbon electrode price amounted to $4,282 per ton (CIF, South Africa), falling by -2.7% against the previous month. Over the period from July 2022 to July 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 17% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $4,400 per ton, and then contracted slightly in the following month.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were France ($4,902 per ton) and Spain ($4,474 per ton), while the price for India ($3,998 per ton) and China ($4,154 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
