Chlorides Imports in South Africa Drop by 17%, Reaching $12 Million in 2023

For the fifth year in a row, South Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), which increased by 14% to 21K tons in 2023. Over the period under review, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chlorides imports fell notably to $12M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. Imports by Country

China (10K tons), India (9.2K tons) and the Netherlands (969 tons) were the main suppliers of chlorides imports to South Africa, together comprising 97% of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +24.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($5.6M), India ($5M) and the Netherlands ($376K) constituted the largest chlorides suppliers to South Africa, together comprising 91% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, India, with a CAGR of +26.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the chlorides price stood at $569 per ton (CIF, South Africa), shrinking by -26.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $776 per ton, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($546 per ton), while the price for Israel ($338 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
