South Africa Chlorine Export Price in February 2023
In February 2023, the chlorine price stood at $1,752 per ton (FOB, South Africa), picking up by 1.5% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when the average export price increased by 37% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,876 per ton. From April 2022 to February 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($4,039 per ton), while the average price for exports to Zimbabwe ($1,068 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

South Africa Chlorine Exports
In February 2023, overseas shipments of chlorine were finally on the rise to reach 293 tons after two months of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 when exports increased by 33% month-to-month.
In value terms, chlorine exports surged to $514K (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a mild increase from February 2022 to February 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, exports decreased by -46.5% against November 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 36% m-o-m.
South Africa Chlorine Exports by Country
Zimbabwe (93 tons), Namibia (67 tons) and Mozambique (37 tons) were the main destinations of chlorine exports from South Africa, together accounting for 67% of total exports. These countries were followed by Zambia, Botswana, Swaziland and Democratic Republic of the Congo, which together accounted for a further 32%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +2.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mozambique ($130K), Zimbabwe ($99K) and Botswana ($83K) were the largest markets for chlorine exported from South Africa worldwide, together comprising 61% of total exports. These countries were followed by Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Democratic Republic of the Congo, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Namibia, with a CAGR of +6.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
