South Africa Sees a Slight Decline in Concrete Tile Exports, Down to $6.3M in 2023

South Africa Concrete Tile Exports

In 2023, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone, when their volume decreased by -4.2% to 58K tons. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +63.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 60K tons in 2022, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, concrete tile exports dropped sharply to $6.3M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports recorded a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 45% against the previous year. Exports by Country

Lesotho (33K tons) was the main destination for concrete tile exports from South Africa, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, concrete tile exports to Lesotho exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (9.8K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Swaziland (4.2K tons), with a 7.3% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to Lesotho totaled +6.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+103.5% per year) and Swaziland (+3.2% per year).

In value terms, Lesotho ($2.1M) remains the key foreign market for tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone exports from South Africa, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($842K), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 10% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Lesotho stood at -4.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+70.8% per year) and Nigeria (+3.6% per year).

Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $232 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($368 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($64 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
