South Africa Sees Rise in Confectionery Imports, Reaching $265 Million in 2023

South Africa Confectionery Imports

Confectionery imports into South Africa rose significantly to 102K tons in 2023, increasing by 5.1% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +67.6% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, confectionery imports rose sharply to $265M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19%. Imports by Country

In 2023, Swaziland (20K tons) constituted the largest supplier of confectionery to South Africa, with a 20% share of total imports. Moreover, confectionery imports from Swaziland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Zambia (7.4K tons), threefold. Belgium (6.1K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.9% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Swaziland amounted to -1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (+35.6% per year) and Belgium (+10.9% per year).

In value terms, Swaziland ($42M), Belgium ($27M) and Italy ($21M) were the largest confectionery suppliers to South Africa, together comprising 34% of total imports. Germany, the UK, Cote d'Ivoire, Zambia, Malaysia and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Zambia, with a CAGR of +35.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

Candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery (53K tons) and chocolate and confectionery (49K tons) were the main products of confectionery imports to South Africa.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery (with a CAGR of +3.2%).

In value terms, chocolate and confectionery ($183M) constituted the largest type of confectionery supplied to South Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by candies, sweets, and nonchocolate confectionery ($83M), with a 31% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the confectionery price amounted to $2,597 per ton (CIF, South Africa), picking up by 3.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $3,415 per ton. From 2015 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($6,211 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($425 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
