July 2023 Sees a 41% Decline in South Africa's Copper Wire Imports, Reaching $54M.

South Africa Copper Wire Imports

In July 2023, after four months of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of copper wire, when their volume decreased by -41.8% to 6.1K tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 with an increase of 170% against the previous month.

In value terms, copper wire imports contracted markedly to $54M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed resilient growth. Imports by Country

In July 2023, the United Arab Emirates (4.8K tons) constituted the largest supplier of copper wire to South Africa, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium (108 tons), with a 1.8% share of total imports.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +11.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Belgium (-14.3% per month) and India (-1.8% per month).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($41M) constituted the largest supplier of copper wire to South Africa, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($957K), with a 1.8% share of total imports.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +12.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Belgium (-14.7% per month) and India (+0.0% per month).

Imports by Type

In July 2023, copper; wire, of refined copper, of which the maximum cross-sectional dimension exceeds 6mm (5.8K tons) was the main type of copper wire supplied to South Africa, with a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, copper; wire, of refined copper, of which the maximum cross-sectional dimension exceeds 6mm exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, copper; wire, of refined copper, of which the maximum cross-sectional dimension is 6mm or less (296 tons), more than tenfold. Copper; wire, of copper-zinc base alloys (brass) (8.8 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.1% share.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of copper; wire, of refined copper, of which the maximum cross-sectional dimension exceeds 6mm stood at +7.7%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: copper; wire, of refined copper, of which the maximum cross-sectional dimension is 6mm or less (-1.4% per month) and copper; wire, of copper-zinc base alloys (brass) (+2.3% per month).

In value terms, copper; wire, of refined copper, of which the maximum cross-sectional dimension exceeds 6mm ($51M) constituted the largest type of copper wire supplied to South Africa, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by copper; wire, of refined copper, of which the maximum cross-sectional dimension is 6mm or less ($2.6M), with a 4.8% share of total imports. It was followed by copper; wire, of copper-zinc base alloys (brass), with a 0.2% share.

Import Prices by Country

In July 2023, the copper wire price stood at $8,832 per ton (CIF, South Africa), growing by 1.5% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 6.7% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $9,152 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were India ($10,805 per ton) and Germany ($9,417 per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($8,727 per ton) and Belgium ($8,883 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
