South Africa Copper Wire Imports
In July 2023, after four months of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of copper wire, when their volume decreased by -41.8% to 6.1K tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 with an increase of 170% against the previous month.
In value terms, copper wire imports contracted markedly to $54M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when imports increased by 188% m-o-m.

In July 2023, the United Arab Emirates (4.8K tons) constituted the largest supplier of copper wire to South Africa, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. It was followed by Belgium (108 tons), with a 1.8% share of total imports.

The second position in the ranking was taken by copper; wire, of refined copper, of which the maximum cross-sectional dimension is 6mm or less ($2.6M), with a 4.8% share of total imports. It was followed by copper; wire, of copper-zinc base alloys (brass), with a 0.2% share.
Import Prices by Country
In July 2023, the copper wire price stood at $8,832 per ton (CIF, South Africa), growing by 1.5% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 6.7% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $9,152 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were India ($10,805 per ton) and Germany ($9,417 per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($8,727 per ton) and Belgium ($8,883 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
