South Africa DC Motor Imports
In 2023, approx. 5.7M units of DC motors were imported into South Africa; growing by 5.3% compared with 2022 figures. Overall, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by -2.5% against 2021 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 70%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 5.9M units. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, DC motor imports totaled $82M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 147% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $171M. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
China (1.8M units), Thailand (929K units) and Indonesia (787K units) were the main suppliers of DC motor imports to South Africa, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Germany, Serbia, Switzerland, Japan, Italy and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Serbia (with a CAGR of +138.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($16M), Germany ($11M) and Serbia ($11M) were the largest DC motor suppliers to South Africa, together comprising 47% of total imports.
Serbia, with a CAGR of +175.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
Electric motors (3.1M units), electric motors and generators (2.1M units) and electric motors and generators (446K units) were the main products of DC motor imports to South Africa, with a combined 99% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for electric motors and generators (with a CAGR of +32.2%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, electric motors and generators ($36M), electric motors ($26M) and electric motors and generators ($12M) were the most imported types of DC motors in South Africa, with a combined 91% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the dc motor price stood at $14 per unit (CIF, South Africa), increasing by 3.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 268%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $50 per unit. From 2021 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($43 per unit), while the price for Thailand ($3.4 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
