South Africa Domestic Appliances Imports
Domestic appliances imports into South Africa expanded rapidly to 35M units in 2024, growing by 13% compared with 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 179% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2024 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, domestic appliances imports expanded significantly to $548M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $614M. From 2022 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
In 2023, China (29M units) was the main supplier of domestic appliances to South Africa, with a 91% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey (262K units), with a 0.8% share of total imports. Malaysia (188K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.6% share.
From 2014 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+5.5% per year) and Malaysia (+2.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($325M) constituted the largest supplier of domestic appliances to South Africa, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($42M), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 5.7% share.
From 2014 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+9.4% per year) and Italy (-3.9% per year).
Imports by Type
Domestic electro-thermic appliances other than heaters, dryers, irons, ovens, toasters and coffee machines (6.6M units), electric smoothing irons (4.1M units) and electric ovens, cookers, cooking plates, boiling rings, grillers and roasters (3.6M units) were the main products of domestic appliances imports to South Africa, together comprising 40% of total imports. Table, floor, wall, window, ceiling or roof fans, electric shavers, hair-removing appliances and hair clippers, electric water heaters and immersion heaters, iron or steel gas domestic appliances, domestic food grinders and mixers and fruit or vegetable juice extractors, domestic, non-electric, cooking or heating appliances, microwave ovens, electric space heating apparatus and soil heating apparatus, electric hair dryers, hair curlers and curling tongs, vacuum cleaners with motor, domestic electric toasters, household refrigerators and freezers (not combined), combined refrigerators-freezers, non-electric instantaneous or storage water heaters, household washing and drying machines, electric blankets, domestic electric coffee or tea makers, ventilating or eecycling hoods incorporating a fan, iron or steel solid fuel domestic appliances, non-electric air heaters or hot air distributors, household dishwashing machines, iron or steel liquid fuel domestic appliances, electric hand-drying apparatus and vacuum cleaners without motor lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 60%.
From 2014 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for iron or steel gas domestic appliances (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, domestic appliances with the largest imports in South Africa were electric ovens, cookers, cooking plates, boiling rings, grillers and roasters ($72M), microwave ovens ($51M) and combined refrigerators-freezers ($50M), together comprising 31% of total imports. Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the domestic appliances price stood at $15 per unit (CIF, South Africa), with a decrease of -17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 207%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $47 per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.
