In 2023, the amount of ferro-alloys exported from South Africa surged to 4.4M tons, increasing by 17% on 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 4.4M tons in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2023.

In value terms, ferro-alloys exports amounted to $4.8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 54%. Exports by Country

China (1.7M tons), Mozambique (1M tons) and Belgium (260K tons) were the main destinations of ferro-alloys exports from South Africa, with a combined 67% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +69.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for ferro-alloys exported from South Africa were China ($1.6B), Mozambique ($1.1B) and Belgium ($302M), together comprising 62% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +70.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Ferro-chromium (4M tons) was the largest type of ferro-alloys exported from South Africa, with a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, ferro-chromium exceeded the volume of the second product type, ferro-manganese (198K tons), more than tenfold. Ferro-silico-manganese (87K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of ferro-chromium exports totaled +3.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: ferro-manganese (-10.8% per year) and ferro-silico-manganese (+10.5% per year).

In value terms, ferro-chromium ($4.2B) remains the largest type of ferro-alloys exported from South Africa, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by ferro-manganese ($289M), with a 6% share of total exports. It was followed by miscellaneous ferro-alloys, with a 2.7% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of ferro-chromium exports stood at +4.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: ferro-manganese (-7.6% per year) and miscellaneous ferro-alloys (-2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the ferro-alloys price stood at $1,096 per ton (FOB, South Africa), falling by -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $1,144 per ton in 2022, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,457 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($974 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
