In 2023, overseas shipments of ferro-silicon increased by 3.4% to 49K tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, total exports indicated a notable increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +30.2% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 45%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at 56K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ferro-silicon exports totaled $75M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, total exports indicated tangible growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +43.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
Botswana (6K tons), India (4.8K tons) and Australia (4.2K tons) were the main destinations of ferro-silicon exports from South Africa, together accounting for 31% of total exports. Zimbabwe, Spain, Namibia, Germany, Russia and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +37.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($15M) emerged as the key foreign market for ferro-silicon exports from South Africa, comprising 21% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($7.1M), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to India stood at +24.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+21.9% per year) and Botswana (-2.7% per year).

Moreover, ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight 55% or less of silicon exceeded the volume of the second product type, ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight more than 55% of silicon (16K tons), twofold.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight 55% or less of silicon exports totaled +2.5%.
In value terms, ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight 55% or less of silicon ($39M) and ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight more than 55% of silicon ($36M) constituted the most exported types of ferro-silicon from South Africa worldwide.
Ferro-alloys; ferro-silicon, containing by weight more than 55% of silicon, with a CAGR of +11.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the ferro-silicon price stood at $1,545 per ton (FOB, South Africa), remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,596 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($3,196 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($1,090 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
