South Africa Gold Import Price in February 2023
In February 2023, the gold price amounted to $54.5M per ton (CIF, South Africa), with a decrease of -2.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 147% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $56.4M per ton in February 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to February 2023.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($59.5M per ton), while the price for Namibia stood at $55.3M per ton.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+0.0%).

South Africa Gold Imports
In February 2023, the amount of gold imported into South Africa dropped remarkably to 783 kg, with a decrease of -41.6% against the previous month's figure. Overall, imports, however, recorded modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 with an increase of 103% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.6 tons. From August 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, gold imports contracted dramatically to $43M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 with an increase of 56% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of $75M, and then contracted remarkably in the following month.

In February 2023, Namibia (749 kg) was the main supplier of gold to South Africa, accounting for a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by Botswana (20 kg), with a 2.6% share of total imports.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Namibia amounted to +1.3%.
In value terms, Namibia ($41M) constituted the largest supplier of gold to South Africa, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($1.2M), with a 2.8% share of total imports.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Namibia amounted to +1.1%.
