Luggage Imports Surge to $12 Million in South Africa, August 2024

South Africa Luggage Imports

In August 2024, overseas purchases of luggage and handbags increased by 30% to 8.9M units, rising for the third month in a row after five months of decline. Overall, imports recorded a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2024 when imports increased by 35% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in August 2024.

In value terms, luggage imports rose markedly to $12M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2024. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3% over the period from August 2023 to August 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2024 with an increase of 36% against the previous month. Imports by Country

In August 2024, China (8.5M units) was the main luggage supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 96% share of total imports. It was followed by India (171K units), with a 1.9% share of total imports. Vietnam (24K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.3% share.

From August 2023 to August 2024, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China stood at +2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: India (+10.6% per month) and Vietnam (+0.1% per month).

In value terms, China ($9M) constituted the largest supplier of luggage to South Africa, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($679K), with a 5.8% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 5.2% share.

From August 2023 to August 2024, the average monthly growth rate of value from China totaled +3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Italy (-1.2% per month) and France (+0.5% per month).

Imports by Type

In August 2024, handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials (5.4M units) constituted the largest type of luggage supplied to South Africa, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of plastics or of textile materials (1.3M units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by travel sets; for personal toilet, sewing, shoe or clothes cleaning (687K units), with a 7.7% share.

From August 2023 to August 2024, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials stood at +4.3%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of plastics or of textile materials (-4.3% per month) and travel sets; for personal toilet, sewing, shoe or clothes cleaning (+14.7% per month).

In value terms, the most traded types of luggage and handbags in South Africa were handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials ($5.4M), cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of plastics or of textile materials ($3.2M) and handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather ($1.4M), with a combined 85% share of total imports. These products were followed by handbags with outer surface of vulcanised fibre or of paperboard, cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of vulcanised fibre or of paperboard, travel sets; for personal toilet, sewing, shoe or clothes cleaning and cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of leather, of composition leather or of patent leather, which together accounted for a further 15%.

Import Prices by Country

In August 2024, the luggage price amounted to $1.3 per unit (CIF, South Africa), falling by -17.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2024 when the average import price increased by 52% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $2.2 per unit in May 2024; however, from June 2024 to August 2024, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($2.0 per unit), while the price for China amounted to $1.1 per unit.

From August 2023 to August 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.0%).
