Exports by Country
the Netherlands (134K tons), the UK (97K tons) and the United Arab Emirates (57K tons) were the main destinations of mandarin and clementine exports from South Africa, with a combined 46% share of total exports. Russia, the United States, China and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +71.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for mandarin and clementine exported from South Africa were the Netherlands ($131M), the UK ($91M) and the United States ($63M), with a combined 49% share of total exports. Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Canada and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +67.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the mandarin and clementine price amounted to $934 per ton (FOB, South Africa), increasing by 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $1,032 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,272 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($764 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
