South Africa Nail And Bolt Import Price in May 2023
In May 2023, the nail and bolt price stood at $3,873 per ton (CIF, South Africa), growing by 12% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 10,417% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $4,220 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to May 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($16,948 per ton), while the price for the Philippines ($1,691 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+17.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was nails, tacks, drawing pins, staples (not those of heading no. 8305) and the like, of copper or iron or steel with heads of copper; screws bolts, nuts, screws hooks, rivets, cotters, washers of copper ($15,473 per ton), while the price for nails, tacks, drawing pins, corrugated nails, staples (not those of heading no. 8305) and the like, of iron or steel, with heads of other material or not, but excluding articles with heads of copper ($1,095 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by screws, bolts, nuts, coach screws, screw hooks, rivets, cotters, cotter-pins, washers (including spring washers) and similar articles, of iron or steel (+6.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
South Africa Nail And Bolt Imports
In May 2023, imports of nails, tacks, staples, screws and bolts into South Africa dropped modestly to 5K tons, approximately equating April 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 with an increase of 14,361% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 544K tons. From April 2023 to May 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, nail and bolt imports expanded notably to $19M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient increase from May 2022 to May 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +7.8% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2023 figures, imports increased by +20.8% against February 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 with an increase of 146% against the previous month.

Moreover, screws, bolts, nuts, coach screws, screw hooks, rivets, cotters, cotter-pins, washers (including spring washers) and similar articles, of iron or steel exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, nails, tacks, drawing pins, corrugated nails, staples (not those of heading no. 8305) and the like, of iron or steel, with heads of other material or not, but excluding articles with heads of copper (723 tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by nails, tacks, drawing pins, staples (not those of heading no. 8305) and the like, of copper or iron or steel with heads of copper; screws bolts, nuts, screws hooks, rivets, cotters, washers of copper (38 tons), with a 0.8% share.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of screws, bolts, nuts, coach screws, screw hooks, rivets, cotters, cotter-pins, washers (including spring washers) and similar articles, of iron or steel amounted to +3.7%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: nails, tacks, drawing pins, corrugated nails, staples (not those of heading no. 8305) and the like, of iron or steel, with heads of other material or not, but excluding articles with heads of copper (-2.1% per month) and nails, tacks, drawing pins, staples (not those of heading no. 8305) and the like, of copper or iron or steel with heads of copper; screws bolts, nuts, screws hooks, rivets, cotters, washers of copper (-5.5% per month).
In value terms, screws, bolts, nuts, coach screws, screw hooks, rivets, cotters, cotter-pins, washers (including spring washers) and similar articles, of iron or steel ($18M) constituted the largest type of nail and bolt supplied to South Africa, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by nails, tacks, drawing pins, corrugated nails, staples (not those of heading no. 8305) and the like, of iron or steel, with heads of other material or not, but excluding articles with heads of copper ($792K), with a 4.1% share of total imports. It was followed by nails, tacks, drawing pins, staples (not those of heading no. 8305) and the like, of copper or iron or steel with heads of copper; screws bolts, nuts, screws hooks, rivets, cotters, washers of copper, with a 3.1% share.
South Africa Nail And Bolt Imports by Country
In May 2023, China (3.5K tons) constituted the largest supplier of nail and bolt to South Africa, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, nail and bolt imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (238 tons), more than tenfold. Germany (210 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.2% share.
