South Africa Packaging Materials Imports
Packaging materials imports into South Africa expanded sharply to 429K tons in 2024, with an increase of 9% on 2023 figures. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2014 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports decreased by -17.7% against 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of 50%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 521K tons. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, packaging materials imports shrank to $452M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2014 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports decreased by -11.1% against 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $508M. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
Finland (42K tons), Brazil (42K tons) and China (38K tons) were the main suppliers of packaging materials imports to South Africa, together comprising 31% of total imports. Germany, the United States, Sweden, Spain, Austria and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
From 2014 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +24.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest packaging materials suppliers to South Africa were Germany ($63M), China ($47M) and Finland ($46M), together comprising 33% of total imports. Pakistan, Brazil, Spain, the United States, Austria and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
Pakistan, with a CAGR of +21.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
Folding boxboard (186K tons), paperboard case materials (132K tons) and wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard (107K tons) were the main products of packaging materials imports to South Africa, with a combined 99% share of total imports.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by paperboard case materials (with a CAGR of +15.7%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, folding boxboard ($253M) constituted the largest type of packaging materials supplied to South Africa, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard ($114M), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by paperboard case materials, with an 18% share.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the packaging materials price amounted to $1,213 per ton (CIF, South Africa), jumping by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $1,218 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,983 per ton), while the price for Australia ($537 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
