South Africa's July 2023 Peanut Butter Export Reaches Record High of $1.7M

South Africa Peanut Butter Exports

For the third month in a row, South Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of peanut butter and prepared or preserved groundnuts, which increased by 7.5% to 665 tons in July 2023. Overall, total exports indicated measured growth from July 2022 to July 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.9% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, exports increased by +91.7% against February 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 64% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in July 2023.

In value terms, peanut butter exports expanded sharply to $1.7M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from July 2022 to July 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, exports increased by +3.7% against March 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when exports increased by 74% m-o-m. Exports by Country

Botswana (208 tons), Namibia (194 tons) and Swaziland (99 tons) were the main destinations of peanut butter exports from South Africa, with a combined 75% share of total exports.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the biggest increases were in Namibia (with a CAGR of +5.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Botswana ($586K), Namibia ($488K) and Swaziland ($195K) constituted the largest markets for peanut butter exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 77% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Namibia, with a CAGR of +4.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In July 2023, the peanut butter price amounted to $2,481 per ton (FOB, South Africa), surging by 2.9% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 20% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,842 per ton. From February 2023 to July 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Botswana ($2,815 per ton) and Namibia ($2,509 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($1,974 per ton) and Lesotho ($2,025 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
