South Africa Plum And Sloe Exports
In 2023, overseas shipments of plums and sloes decreased by -19.1% to 78K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total exports indicated a modest increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 96K tons in 2022, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
In value terms, plum and sloe exports shrank sharply to $91M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a mild increase from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 84% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $114M in 2022, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country
the Netherlands (32K tons) was the main destination for plum and sloe exports from South Africa, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, plum and sloe exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (13K tons), twofold. the United Arab Emirates (11K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-1.8% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.5% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($40M) remains the key foreign market for plums and sloes exports from South Africa, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($16M), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 13% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Netherlands stood at +1.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-1.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the plum and sloe price stood at $1,174 per ton (FOB, South Africa), standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,399 per ton. From 2015 to 2023, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($1,563 per ton), while the average price for exports to Zimbabwe ($336 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
