South Africa Polyvinyl Chloride Imports
In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of polyvinyl chloride, when their volume decreased by -34.7% to 58K tons. Overall, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 88K tons in 2022, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, polyvinyl chloride imports fell notably to $57M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 151%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $122M in 2022, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, China (21K tons) constituted the largest supplier of polyvinyl chloride to South Africa, accounting for a 36% share of total imports. Moreover, polyvinyl chloride imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sweden (7.2K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (5.4K tons), with a 9.4% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +9.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (+23.1% per year) and Germany (+6.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest polyvinyl chloride suppliers to South Africa were China ($16M), Germany ($10M) and Sweden ($5.5M), together comprising 56% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Sweden, with a CAGR of +14.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the polyvinyl chloride price stood at $992 per ton (CIF, South Africa), which is down by -28.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 55%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,560 per ton. From 2022 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($2,259 per ton), while the price for Spain ($738 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Portugal (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
