South Africa Pork Import Price in April 2023
In April 2023, the pork price amounted to $2,611 per ton (CIF, South Africa), picking up by 7.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 an increase of 12% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,748 per ton. From July 2022 to April 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($3,387 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($1,570 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

South Africa Pork Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplied products. In April 2023, the product with the highest price was fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($2,872 per ton), while the price for frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases totaled $2,600 per ton.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by frozen pork cut (+9.5%), while the prices for the other product experienced more modest paces of growth.
South Africa Pork Imports
In April 2023, after two months of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of pork, when their volume decreased by -14.9% to 1.3K tons. Overall, imports showed a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 when imports increased by 47% month-to-month.
In value terms, pork imports declined to $3.3M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when imports increased by 39% m-o-m.

In April 2023, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases (1.2K tons) was the main type of pork supplied to South Africa, accounting for a 96% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases (53 tons), more than tenfold.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases stood at -2.7%.
In value terms, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($3.2M) constituted the largest type of pork supplied to South Africa, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($152K), with a 4.5% share of total imports.

In April 2023, Brazil (707 tons) constituted the largest supplier of pork to South Africa, accounting for a 55% share of total imports. In value terms, Brazil ($2M) constituted the largest supplier of pork to South Africa, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($512K), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 9.8% share.
