South African Potato Chip Prices Reach $3,681 per Ton

South Africa Potato Chips Export Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the potato chips price stood at $3,681 per ton (FOB, South Africa), increasing by 3.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 87% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $4,230 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to February 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($5,285 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($1,678 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

South Africa Potato Chips Exports

In February 2023, approximately 788 tons of potato chips were exported from South Africa; with a decrease of -17.4% compared with January 2023 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 with an increase of 116% month-to-month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.9K tons. From November 2022 to February 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips exports reduced to $2.9M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. In general, total exports indicated a perceptible increase from February 2022 to February 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, exports decreased by -24.5% against November 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when exports increased by 43% m-o-m.

South Africa Potato Chips Exports by Country

Botswana (196 tons), Zimbabwe (149 tons) and Namibia (109 tons) were the main destinations of potato chips exports from South Africa, together comprising 58% of total exports. These countries were followed by Zambia, Swaziland, Lesotho and Mozambique, which together accounted for a further 32%.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in Swaziland (with a CAGR of +6.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($785K), Botswana ($693K) and Namibia ($402K) were the largest markets for potato chips exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 65% share of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +6.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
