South Africa's Raspberry and Blackberry Export Sees Slight Decline to $24M in 2023
South Africa Raspberry And Blackberry Exports
In 2023, overseas shipments of raspberries and blackberries decreased by -12.9% to 1.8K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 2.1K tons in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, raspberry and blackberry exports contracted to $24M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $25M in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country
the UK (566 tons), Saudi Arabia (333 tons) and the United Arab Emirates (324 tons) were the main destinations of raspberry and blackberry exports from South Africa, with a combined 68% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +236.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the UK ($6.8M), the United Arab Emirates ($5M) and Saudi Arabia ($4.9M) appeared to be the largest markets for raspberry and blackberry exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 70% share of total exports.
Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +267.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the raspberry and blackberry price amounted to $13,202 per ton (FOB, South Africa), with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 19% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2023 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($15,484 per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($3,187 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
