Price of Raspberries and Blackberries Drops to $13.4/kg in South Africa
South Africa Raspberry and Blackberry Export Price in February 2023
In February 2023, the raspberry and blackberry price stood at $13,416 per ton, therefore (FOB, South Africa), remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 when the average export price increased by 99% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $13,757 per ton. From September 2022 to February 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($15,455 per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($4,742 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Botswana (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

South Africa Raspberry and Blackberry Exports
After six months of growth, overseas shipments of raspberries and blackberries decreased by -63.1% to 147 tons in February 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 when exports increased by 417% month-to-month.
In value terms, raspberry and blackberry exports contracted significantly to $2M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 with an increase of 930% m-o-m.
South Africa Raspberry and Blackberry Exports by Country
The UK (51 tons), Kuwait (27 tons) and the United Arab Emirates (24 tons) were the main destinations of raspberry and blackberry exports from South Africa, with a combined 69% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Botswana and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 27%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +26.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for raspberry and blackberry exported from South Africa were the UK ($638K), Kuwait ($405K) and the United Arab Emirates ($371K), together accounting for 72% of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Botswana and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
Qatar, with a CAGR of +24.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
