South Africa Refined Coconut Oil Imports

In 2024, approx. 4.8K tons of refined coconut (copra) oil were imported into South Africa; growing by 37% compared with the year before. In general, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2014 to 2024: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports decreased by -14.5% against 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 5.7K tons in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, refined coconut oil imports soared to $7.4M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2024, Indonesia (2.1K tons) constituted the largest supplier of refined coconut oil to South Africa, accounting for a 42% share of total imports. Moreover, refined coconut oil imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mozambique (905 tons), twofold. the Philippines (883 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 18% share.

From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia totaled -2.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mozambique (+9.4% per year) and the Philippines (+13.5% per year).

In value terms, Indonesia ($3M), the Philippines ($1.5M) and Malaysia ($1.4M) were the largest refined coconut oil suppliers to South Africa, together comprising 78% of total imports. Mozambique and Sri Lanka lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Among the main suppliers, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +9.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2024, the refined coconut oil price stood at $1,540 per ton (CIF, South Africa), flattening at the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,268 per ton in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the Philippines ($1,674 per ton) and Malaysia ($1,638 per ton), while the price for Mozambique ($1,324 per ton) and Indonesia ($1,441 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
