South Africa Roundwood Exports
In 2023, shipments abroad of roundwood increased by 14% to 1.4M cubic meters, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, roundwood exports declined notably to $68M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $83M in 2022, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country
Swaziland (666K cubic meters), China (366K cubic meters) and India (116K cubic meters) were the main destinations of roundwood exports from South Africa, together accounting for 80% of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +61.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($23M), Swaziland ($13M) and India ($8.3M) were the largest markets for roundwood exported from South Africa worldwide, together comprising 64% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +60.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Industrial roundwood (725K cubic meters) and wood fuel (702K cubic meters) were the main products of roundwood exports from South Africa.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for industrial roundwood (with a CAGR of +12.4%).
In value terms, industrial roundwood ($50M) remains the largest type of roundwood exported from South Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by wood fuel ($18M), with a 27% share of total exports.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of industrial roundwood exports stood at +11.4%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the roundwood price stood at $48 per cubic meter (FOB, South Africa), reducing by -27.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 51%. The export price peaked at $66 per cubic meter in 2022, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($96 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($19 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
