South Africa Spectacle Glass Lenses Imports
Spectacle glass lenses imports into South Africa declined remarkably to 283K units in September 2023, shrinking by -35.4% compared with August 2023 figures. In general, imports saw a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 with an increase of 75% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 890K units. From January 2023 to September 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, spectacle glass lenses imports fell to $1.5M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 with an increase of 36% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 2.7M units in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to September 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Thailand (96K units), China (80K units) and the Philippines (37K units) were the main suppliers of spectacle glass lenses imports to South Africa, together comprising 75% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +3.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country
