South Africa Spice Exports
After two months of growth, overseas shipments of spices decreased by -7.8% to 2.3K tons in September 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 57% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 3.1K tons. From December 2022 to September 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, spice exports declined to $7.9M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 with an increase of 61% against the previous month.

Exports by Country
Namibia (415 tons), Botswana (382 tons) and Mozambique (331 tons) were the main destinations of spice exports from South Africa, with a combined 50% share of total exports.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the biggest increases were in Mozambique (with a CAGR of +8.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mozambique ($1.4M), Botswana ($1.4M) and Namibia ($1.1M) constituted the largest markets for spice exported from South Africa worldwide, with a combined 49% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +12.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Spices except pepper or ginger (1.9K tons) was the largest type of spice exported from South Africa, with a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, spices except pepper or ginger exceeded the volume of the second product type, piper pepper (148 tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by pimenta pepper (128 tons), with a 5.7% share.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of spices except pepper or ginger was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: piper pepper (-3.1% per month) and pimenta pepper (-2.2% per month).
In value terms, spices except pepper or ginger ($6.2M) remains the largest type of spice exported from South Africa, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by piper pepper ($987K), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by pimenta pepper, with a 5.7% share.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of spices except pepper or ginger totaled +1.7%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: piper pepper (-0.2% per month) and pimenta pepper (-0.9% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In September 2023, the spice price amounted to $3,521 per ton (FOB, South Africa), surging by 2.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 19% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $3,746 per ton. From May 2023 to September 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($7,322 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($1,859 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
