South Africa's Stranded Wire Prices leap to $3,085 per Ton in 2022 as Market Volatility Ensuing

South Africa Stranded Wire Import Price in December 2022

In December 2022, the stranded wire price stood at $3,085 per ton (CIF, South Africa), increasing by 29% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 47% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $4,265 per ton. From June 2022 to December 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($7,076 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($2,092 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+20.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

South Africa Stranded Wire Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was copper stranded wire, cables and plaited bands ($12,077 per ton), while the price for stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated ($3,016 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated (+0.8%), while the prices for the other products experienced a decline.

South Africa Stranded Wire Imports

In December 2022, the amount of stranded wire, ropes and cables imported into South Africa declined sharply to 1.7K tons, which is down by -45.6% on the previous month. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 110% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 3.1K tons, and then shrank markedly in the following month.

In value terms, stranded wire imports declined markedly to $5.1M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when imports increased by 83% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 7.9K tons in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to December 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

South Africa Stranded Wire Imports by Type

In December 2022, stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated (1.6K tons) was the main type of stranded wire supplied to South Africa, accounting for a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, aluminium; stranded wire, cables, plaited bands and the like, (not electrically insulated) (98 tons), more than tenfold.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated amounted to -1.3%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: aluminium; stranded wire, cables, plaited bands and the like, (not electrically insulated) (+32.7% per month) and copper stranded wire, cables and plaited bands (+1.2% per month).

In value terms, stranded wire, ropes, cables, plaited bands, slings and the like, of iron or steel, not electrically insulated ($4.7M) constituted the largest type of stranded wire supplied to South Africa, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by aluminium; stranded wire, cables, plaited bands and the like, (not electrically insulated) ($321K), with a 6.3% share of total imports.

South Africa Stranded Wire Imports by Country

In December 2022, China (1.1K tons) constituted the largest stranded wire supplier to South Africa, accounting for a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, stranded wire imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (140 tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (129 tons), with a 7.8% share.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (+27.8% per month) and Italy (-5.3% per month).

In value terms, China ($2.3M) constituted the largest supplier of stranded wire to South Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($991K), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 10% share.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (+17.9% per month) and Malaysia (+5.0% per month).
