South Africa Stuffed Pasta and Couscous Imports
After three months of growth, purchases abroad of stuffed pasta and couscous decreased by -25.6% to 2.1K tons in November 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2023 when imports increased by 85% against the previous month.
In value terms, stuffed pasta and couscous imports contracted remarkably to $2.4M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2023 with an increase of 98% against the previous month.

Imports by Country
China (746 tons), Namibia (716 tons) and Indonesia (309 tons) were the main suppliers of stuffed pasta and couscous imports to South Africa, together comprising 83% of total imports. Mozambique, South Korea and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +13.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest stuffed pasta and couscous suppliers to South Africa were China ($740K), Namibia ($600K) and Indonesia ($570K), with a combined 80% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +9.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
In November 2023, dried, undried and frozen pasta and pasta products (1.9K tons) constituted the largest type of stuffed pasta and couscous supplied to South Africa, with a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, dried, undried and frozen pasta and pasta products exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, pasta stuffed with meat, fish and cheese (129 tons), more than tenfold.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of dried, undried and frozen pasta and pasta products stood at +2.5%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: pasta stuffed with meat, fish and cheese (+3.5% per month) and couscous (+0.4% per month).
In value terms, dried, undried and frozen pasta and pasta products ($2.1M) constituted the largest type of stuffed pasta and couscous supplied to South Africa, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by couscous ($163K), with a 6.8% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In November 2023, the stuffed pasta and couscous price stood at $1,127 per ton (CIF, South Africa), waning by -9.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2023 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $1,450 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to November 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($2,518 per ton), while the price for Mozambique ($735 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
